As role models go Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are as A List as they come.

It’s therefore a salutary reminder, writes Louise Barretto, Head of our Family Law team, that arrangements for the children in a separation or divorce case is invariably top of the list of my clients’ concerns.

It has been reported widely online that Brad Pitt wants equal time with his children as his ex-wife, but she has opposed his request.

The couple have five children under the age of 18: Pax Thien, 16; Zahara Marley, 15; Shiloh, 14 and twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, 12. Their eldest child, son Maddox, has the free will to go to either parent as he is aged 19, but it has been reported that the teenager is not on good terms with his father.

“Tensions have escalated between Brad and Angelina, with family therapy no longer taking place,” the online article goes on to report.

We don’t know what the issues are in this case, but the fact that they have been attending family therapy is commendable, and something as a Family lawyer I would always encourage.

Unfortunately it seems that they cannot agree on a shared care based on an equal division of time.

This can sometimes be good for the children but in many cases it can be disruptive to both their schooling and social arrangements when they are constantly moving between houses.

It very much depends on what the children will most benefit from, and in Brad and Angelina’s case, their children are also at various stages of their education. Any arrangement will need to factor in these practicalities whilst still ensuring that the children retain a relationship with both their parents.

This situation will likely be yet further complicated by the parents’ work commitments which will involve a lot of travel, often internationally, as both parents pursue their careers.
