Cost increases to Lasting Powers of Attorney - Bishop & Sewell - Law Firm

The cost of securing your financial future through Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is about to increase, with new fees coming into effect later this year that will impact thousands of applications.

From 17 November 2025, the registration fee for each LPA application will increase from £82 to £92. Given that most people choose both a Financial Affairs LPA and a Health and Welfare LPA, the total cost will rise from £164 to £184.

The Government, when announcing this increase, said it is necessary to continue to meet the cost of delivering these essential services through the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG).

The fee increase comes against a backdrop of unprecedented demand for LPAs. Over the past four years, the number of registrations in England and Wales has more than doubled, jumping from 691,746 in 2020/21 to 1,367,053 in 2024/25.

This increase recognises the importance individuals and their advisers place on LPAs, allowing other trusted individuals to make important decisions on health, wellbeing and finances when you lose the capacity to make those decisions directly.

For individuals planning to establish LPAs in the coming months, the timing of this announcement provides an opportunity to save money. Applications submitted before 17 November will still benefit from the current £82 fee, potentially saving £20 for those needing both types of LPA.

Given the importance and peace of mind LPAs offer ageing and vulnerable individuals and their loved ones, this cost increase remains modest and should not deter individuals from having a valid and up-to-date LPA.
