Adele, the ‘Set fire to the rain’ singer, songwriter superstar will share care (custody) of her eight-year-old son and won’t be paying child support to her now-ex-husband Simon Konecki, according to documents obtained and reported here by The Associated Press.

The writer of ‘Water under the bridge’, ‘He won’t go’ and ‘Take it all’, separated from her husband in August of 2019, and Adele filed for divorce the following month. A judge in Los Angeles finalised their divorce in February.

The British ‘Skyfall’ artist married Konecki, co-founder of Life Water, an eco-friendly brand of bottled water, in May of 2018, according to court documents. But she referred to him as ‘my husband’ during a Grammy acceptance speech in 2017, and the two had been a couple for several years before they married.

As regular readers of Love, Life & the Law will know ‘Common Law’ spouses have very few rights after a death or separation, so by marrying her husband Adele Adkins stood to lose a substantial amount of her fortune.

However, according to the Associated Press, the 32-year-old Adele and the 46-year-old Konecki used Mediation to amicably reach the terms of their divorce. Both waived the right to seek spousal support, and both agreed to joint legal and physical custody of son Angelo, who was born in 2012. The papers say they will seek to resolve any issues without litigation.

I’ve written a lot about the positive benefits of Mediation, here, and here.

It is possible to have a good divorce. Whilst I would rarely advise a couple to divorce without the benefit of a solicitor’s advice, i.e. here rumour has it, it is possible, as in this story in Positive News.
