Stephen Bishop, the founder of Bishop & Sewell tells our story: From modest beginnings in a small office in Holborn, we have gone from strength to strength, and through a mixture of organic growth and a number of strategic acquisitions, we now have over 100 staff in our Russell Square offices, including most notably our Mindfulness & Wellbeing Officer, Maisie the Dog.
Jill Sewell and I started the firm in October 1979. Jill retired from practice in 2007 but I am pleased still to be the firm’s current Managing Partner and Head of Residential Property. As testament to the quality of service we have provided over the years, I am especially proud to say that we continue to act for a number of our original clients.
We have also moved offices several times over the last 41 years although we have been a constant fixture of the Bloomsbury and Midtown legal landscape throughout this time.
Mark Chick, our Senior Partner continues: “When we ended 2019 celebrating the firm’s 40th anniversary, I don’t think that anyone could quite have predicted how 2020 and our 41st year in business was going to go. However, I can honestly say that I have been constantly impressed by the energy, drive and determination of the team here at B&S to ‘adapt and survive’ to working in the new normal”.
“What a year to have taken over as Senior Partner. Having said that, 2020 is the year in which we began our 2020 Vision with a re-aligned strategy and business plan and our revitalised management structure. Our hard work over the 18 months leading up to this stood us in very good stead for the uncertainties of the start of the year. It was great to see our teams all rally round and to present their response to the initial phase of lockdown so promptly and with so much energy, form our COVID-19 newsletter to their swift adaption to remote working. Our admin team also ensured that we retained a physical presence throughout, and it was a pleasure to be able to say right from the start that we were very much open for business”.
In 2017, the long-established name of Fisher Meredith merged with Bishop & Sewell. This merger enabled the formation of our Immigration Department and also strengthened our Family and Dispute Resolution teams. In our journey from 1979 to 2020, the firm has fulfilled its vision to become a full-service Central London law firm, with market leading expertise in a number of areas.
Today Bishop & Sewell offers expert and straightforward legal advice in no less than 20 distinct practice areas, including Residential & Commercial Property, Landlord & Tenant, Corporate & Commercial, Private Client, Family & Divorce, Forming Families, Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Immigration (Business & Personal) and Employment.
Mark Chick concludes: “We continue to capitalise on the energy and enthusiasm of the team here, and we have a number of exciting plans for 2021, of which more will become apparent in due course. What I can say is that we continue very much on our journey to grow and to deliver excellence as an ambitious, passionate and inclusive law firm.”
