As numerous unhappy couples emerge from lockdown it is true that divorce solicitors’ caseloads have increased as people have taken stock of their lives and sometimes decide to make big changes, by leaving their partners. The pressures of the past six months have only served to highlight the strains of a less than satisfactory relationship and financial uncertainty has taken its toll on some relationships.
I and my colleagues are busy discussing clients’ concerns about their unique personal circumstances, giving them some legal and practical advice and talking them through their options should they decide to go ahead and separate from their spouse.
In many cases this is not a bad thing, as in situations where my client has been unhappy for a long time the separation can be viewed as a fresh start for them. Always there are difficult moments, and times where doubt creeps in especially where there are children involved, so it is important that the solicitor you eventually choose to instruct is able to offer different process options that include alternatives to Court, if these are suitable. Equally important is the relationship that you build with your solicitor and his or her team, which should be one based on mutual respect in which the client feels supported throughout the process.
Your solicitor should be able to signpost you to other excellent professionals should you need this. Examples would be: independent financial advisers, accountants, divorce coaches, counsellors and specialists who can assist children through the separation process.

The most important meeting that you will have will be your first one and if you are not comfortable after the initial meeting then I suggest that you continue your search until you find the person that’s right for you.
