In a series of new Q&A features we have introduced on Second Career Lawyers, we spoke with Kevin McCann in our Commercial Property team to learn more about why he chose law for his second career and his experience of working in the legal sector.

What was your background prior to wanting to become a lawyer?

Before I decided to change career I had a variety of roles; I worked in

financial services in Luxembourg and Dublin for a few years and then after

completing my master of business studies I was offered a graduate job here

in London and I worked for a number of industrial companies in marketing and

business development roles.

Why did you decide to change careers and join the law profession?

I always had aspirations to be a solicitor and I was lucky to have the

opportunity a few years ago to enrol in law school and do the LPC exams. It’s

a big commitment but definitely worth it.

What advice would you give to career changers?

If someone is considering a career in law, it’s important to have a

genuine interest in being a solicitor and the law. Try to get as much

experience with solicitors, attend court to see how the judicial system operates and do

volunteer work. I undertook work experience at Bishop & Sewell before my LPC and I

was delighted to be offered a job here when I had completed my studies.

How did you find going back to college to learn a new set of skills?

Readjusting to college life can take time, it’s exciting but at the same

time challenging; sitting in exam halls, the stress of revision and waiting

for results!

What do you most enjoy about your role?

Best thing about the job is there’s so much to learn. There are constant

changes to statute and regulations. It’s also enjoyable working with a

variety of clients; supporting them, their business and helping to resolve their

legal problems.
